Executive Committee
The VMS Executive Committee is comprised of the elected officers of the organization: the president, the president-elect, the vice president, the secretary/treasurer, and the immediate past president. The Executive Committee meets regularly and reports to the VMS Council.
Katie Marvin, M.D., ABFM, President
Katherine (Katie) Gamble Marvin, M.D., ABFM, is a family physician at Lamoille Health Partners, a Federally Qualified Health Center, in Stowe and Morrisville VT. She received her bachelor’s degree from Princeton University, earned her doctorate at the University of Maryland College of Medicine, and completed her family medicine residency at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. Following a surgical obstetrical fellowship at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Washington, she settled in Lamoille County with her husband, a local sugar maker. Dr. Katie Marvin is an advocate for affordable primary care and has been certified by the American Board of Family Medicine since 2007. She specializes in infants, pediatrics, teen health, and outpatient procedures, while also giving attention to areas of need related to social determinants of health. Currently, a portion of her practice focuses on the evidence based and accessible use of medication assisted treatment for people struggling with substance use disorders.
Naiim Ali, M.D., FRCPC, President-Elect
Naiim Ali, M.D., FRCPC, is a Diagnostic Radiologist and Division Chief of Ultrasound Imaging at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington and an Associate Professor of Radiology at UVM’s Larner College of Medicine. Dr. Ali received his medical degree from New Jersey Medical School. He completed his diagnostic radiology residency training at the University of Vermont Medical Center and his fellowship in abdominal imaging and intervention at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
His clinical interests include ultrasound imaging, abdominal/pelvic MRI, abdominal/pelvic CT, nuclear medicine, and gastrointestinal/genitourinary fluoroscopy. Dr. Ali’s research interests include medical education, healthcare policy, healthcare finance, and global health. He has served in various leadership roles in organized medicine societies including the American Medical Association and American College of Radiology since 2010.
Lauren MacAfee, M.D., Vice President
Lauren MacAfee, M.D. is an OB/Gyn and Complex Family Planning Specialist at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Mark Fung, Secretary/Treasurer
Dr. Fung is a Transfusion Medicine physician at the University of Vermont Health Network and Professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM. At the University of Vermont Medical Center, he provides medical oversight in the Blood Bank, Cellular Therapies Laboratory, Coagulation Laboratory, Chemistry Laboratory, and for Point of Care Testing.
Dr. Fung received both his medical degree and doctoral degree in molecular and cellular pathology from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He completed his residency training in pathology and laboratory medicine at Washington University in St Louis and the University of Pittsburgh. He also completed a transfusion medicine/blood banking fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed an additional fellowship in outcomes research at the University of Vermont.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Fung is the vice chair for Research which also includes his prior responsibilities as vice chair for Population Health where he leads and provides mentorship in both areas. He also serves in national and international leadership roles in the areas of transfusion medicine, transplant compatibility testing, and population health for clinical laboratories. His current areas of focus include the development of laboratory literacy as a newly identified component of health literacy for patients and providers, and residency/fellowship training and competency assessment as a trustee and examiner for the American Board of Pathology.
Rebecca Bell, M.D., Immediate Past President
Dr. Bell is a Pediatric Critical Care physician at the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital and an Associate Professor of pediatrics at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM.
Dr. Bell received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and a master’s degree in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed her pediatric residency training as well as her pediatric critical care fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Outside of clinical care, Dr. Bell works on injury prevention efforts for the Vermont Child Health Improvement Program (VCHIP). She serves in leadership roles within the American Academy of Pediatrics at the state and national level and is active in community and legislative advocacy efforts.
Governance
VMS is governed by a Board, which meets to discuss the policy, governance, operations, and finances of the organization. Board membership includes VMS officers, geographic, specialty society and at-large representatives.

The Executive Committee meets regularly and reports to the VMS Board.
Each member has an equal voice at the Annual VMS Membership Meeting, at which the members elect the officers of the organization.
VMS is also represented at meetings of the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association by one Delegate and one Alternate-Delegate.
